Happy Spring!! (and this time I really mean it - last month was technically Spring, but it didn't feel like it until recently - at least in new York)
Welcome to all of the new subscribers to Lawyer Meltdown this month and thanks to those of you who asked questions. To all of my new readers who found me on Twitter, via Lawyerist, Slaw, Technolawyer, or Facebook. We're happy you joined us.
Lawyer Meltdown readers are a diverse (and international) group - since our last issue, we have new subscribers from: Alabama, Delaware, Virginia, New Jersey, Louisiana, Washington, DC, Mexico and South Africa - and that's just in the past month! I hope you all enjoy the Lawyer Meltdown Newsletter.
Keep those questions and your feedback coming. You can send questions, comments or suggestions for future topics for the newsletter, but please do not respond to this email. Instead, email me at Allison@LegalEaseConsulting.com. And of course, if you have a specific question you need answered, feel free to email that, too. I can't wait to hear from you!

Here's what I am working on for 2011:
How to Grow Your Practice on a Shoestring Budget
Paramjit Mahli of SCG Legal PR Network and I are reviving our popular tele-class series, "How to Grow Your Law Practice on a Shoestring Budget," which has already begun. We've totally re-vamped the series, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for the brand new "Home Study" version when it becomes available! But if you've got spring fever and you just can't wait to start building your practice, you can purchase the previous version of the Home Study now for a discounted price, so be sure to look at the featured product below.
Legal Ease Podcast Series

The first installment of the Legal Ease podcast series is in the works and I'm continuing to line up experts and regular attorneys to talk about challenges faced by today's lawyers.
This is a great opportunity for lawyers to tell their stories - and I'm looking for volunteers. Anyone who appears on the podcast will be able to use the recording for their own purposes. Put it on your website, send it to clients or strategic partners, etc. If you're interested in being a part of the Legal Ease podcast series, please email me at Allison@LegalEaseConsulting.com with "PODCAST" in the subject line and I'll follow up with more information.
There's more ... stay tuned to find out what else I'm working on!

Slaw is a Canadian site which includes blog posts as well as columns, and I'm a columnist on the subject of marketing. My most recent post discussed what makes a good testimonial for a law firm website. Feel free to leave your comments - and don't forget to check out Slaw's other columnists and fabulous blog posts, too!

As you know, in addition to writing the Legal Ease Blog, (and contributing to Slaw) I am a contributor to the Lawyerist blog, where I post twice a month. Since the last Lawyer Meltdown Newsletter, I've posted on mind-mapping as a client communication tool, and outsourcing blogs and social media.
I'm still working on my book on alternative pricing for lawyers - BUT I NEED YOUR HELP! I'm working on billing basics as well as some practical tips for using alternative fees in your law practice. Please email me your burning billing questions and stories about using alternative fees.

Events

On May 24, 2011, Mark Merenda of Smart Marketing and I will be re-creating our program on Internet Marketing that we did for the ABA General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division National Solo and Small Firm Conference this past October as a lunchtime webinar for their distance learning series.
On May 26, 2011, I'll be participating in the Massachusetts Law Office Management Assistance Program's Super Marketing Conference. It will be a FREE half day event held at the Massachusetts Bar Association with a number of speakers, followed by networking. If you're in Massachusetts, please consider attending - you can find more information about the Super Marketing Conference and register here!
On August 18, 2011, I'll be participating in one of the ABA Law Practice Management Section's Third Thursday webinars with Dennis Kennedy and Michelle Golden. We'll be discussing how lawyers can use LinkedIn -- more details to follow.
On September 15, 2011, I'll be moderating yet another ABA LPM Third Thursday conference. This time we'll be talking about Strategic Planning for law firms. Panelists will include John Remsen of The Remsen Group and some practitioners who will talk about their experience with the Strategic Planning process.
On December 13, 2011, I'll be presenting a webinar for LEGUS' Coffee Cafe on Motivating Partners to Increase Law Firm Success. I'll be talking about how to get partners to be positive role models for others in the firm, the reasons partners become non-compliant and key strategies to help partners succeed.
I'm continuing to work on my 2011 calendar now, so be sure to follow this space in my upcoming newsletters to find out where I'll be speaking next.
Thanks to all of my readers and clients for your support! I look forward to seeing you at one of my events. Please stop by and say 'hi' if you attend any of these events, or let me know in advance if you'll be attending - maybe we can meet for coffee!
If you're interested in booking me as a speaker for one of your events, please email me. |

How to Grow Your Law Practice on a Shoestring Budget Home Study Version - BIG SALE
Looking for a better way to get quality clients in a challenging economy? Take a look at the Home Study Program, “How to Grow Your Law Practice on a Shoestring Budget.” You can even purchase audios of the individual classes if you aren't interested in the whole series.
Audio #3 covers the first step in attracting high value clients – creating your ideal client profile. After all, you’ve got to know who your best clients are before you can reach them. And once you know who they are, audio #5 will help you create a marketing message to attract exactly the kinds of clients you want.
You can buy individual portions of the program or buy the whole series, which includes: strategies for managing your activities to make time for marketing, tips on networking, speaking engagements and writing (audios #1, 2, 4 and 6) as well as tips on getting media attention and establishing relationships with reporters – regardless of the size of your firm (audio #8). And finally, you’ll learn how to create client loyalty and referrals through excellent client service (audio #7). Get more information and product details on the site.
Since we are currently working on the new version of this series, which will become the new Home Study package, this product is only available for a very limited time, at a big reduction in price!
"The 8 week teleclass was the best money I have spent on my law practice (and still is). The class on Identifying Your Ideal Client alone was worth the purchase price of the whole class. I definitely saw a difference in my practice after taking that class. The materials are so well put together and have so much information, they are great.
Every few months I go back and redo the exercises, to see if things have changed, if I need to tweak anything and to see what's been working. And, I still listen to the CD's when I'm driving sometimes."

“I have really enjoyed listening to both of you. I have learned a lot from both of you, and it has caused me to do a lot of thinking about my clients and my practice. Candidly, the class exceeded my expectations about receiving information to "put it all together" to market my practice.
Thank you both for putting together and presenting a great class.”
Mark R. Callender, Esq.
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
“The seminar exceeded my expectations because it contained so much information that taking the course again is something I think I would do. There were many levels of marketing that were addressed and a ton of information.
My business has grown tremendously as a result of the marketing seminar. I was able to increase my rates, fire bad clients or let them move on. I now have a better evaluating tool for clients and can figure out who will be a good client by objective evaluation of the circumstances. I now have a much better idea of who my ideal client is."

Tips from ABA Techshow 2011
The ABA Techshow is always one of my favorite conferences to attend every year, and two of my favorite sessions from Techshow are always the fast-paced 60 (law practice management) Tips in 60 Minutes and 60 Sites in 60 Minutes sessions. I like these sessions because they are quick and dirty tips that usually can be implemented right away.
The cloud computing session presented by Steve Matthews and Tom Mighell was also filled with a lot of good information and quick tips or sites that can help lawyers improve their practices. I thought I would share a number of those tips with you this month, hoping you'll be intrigued and will check out some of these tips and sites and begin using them to improve your practice NOW. (I haven't tried all of these programs, tips, applications or sites - I'm just passing them along from the Techshow folks)
Outlook Email and Add-ins
- Tired of deleting an email and having to delete it again from "Deleted items" to get rid of it completely? Use shift+delete to permanently delete an email the first time
- Oops! Deleted an email by mistake? Restore deleted emails by going to Tools-Recover deleted items
- Ezdetach from Techhit.com will help you extract attachments from an email so you can save the document where it belongs
- SimplyFile, also from Techhit.com, will file emails in the correct folder with one click so you no longer need to worry where your important client correspondence is located
Websites You Need to Know About
- Webmastercoffee.com: Get a quick analysis of your website - at no cost.
- Phonetag.com: Converts voicemails to text for $29.95/month for unlimited messages
- LegalTube: YouTube for lawyers
- Prezi.com: Create professional-looking presentations online, starting for free, up to $159/month, depending upon your needs
- Makeuseof.com: Cool stuff on the web, including guides on using programs you already have, places to find things on the web, and answers to some of your most burning questions.
- Lynda.com: Need to learn more about your existing software? Tired of training your employees on your software programs? Try Lynda.com for training videos on many popular software programs.
- Rightsignature.com: Want to get a client's signature right away, but can't make and appointment and don't want to wait for the mail? Try this program, which will let you send documents to a client via email for their signature. You can even drag and drop text boxes to allow clients to fill in forms before signing. And clients can sign on their iPhone or Blackberry.
Mobile Time and Expense Tracking
- Blacktrack.com will help you track time and expenses while you are away from your office
- Another application for billing your time (and invoicing clients) while on the go, Bill4Time may help boost your productivity
Remote Meetings, Screen Sharing and Web Conferencing
- Mikogo.com - free web conferencing and desktop sharing tool that doesn't require others you share with to download anything; they receive a link once you've started a session, they click on the link and you're conferencing.
- Brought to you by the folks at logmein.com, Join.me is another free screen-sharing and online meeting program which enables you to share your screen with up to 250 people.
Other tips
- Sick of losing cords behind your desk when you unplug attachments from your computer or unplug your rechargeable gadget? Attach the cord to a binder clip so it stays put, even when it isn't plugged in.
- If you're a Facebook fanatic and you love to play games on Facebook, be aware that playing a game may unlock your privacy settings
Even if these specific tips or programs aren't for you, I hope they spark your imagination and get you thinking of new ways you can service your clients and be more productive. Do some online searching of your own and see if their are sites or apps that already do what you're looking for!
Do you want to improve your firm but don't know how or where to start? Do you think your firm could benefit from improved productivity? I have been conducting assessments and reviews for my clients in the new year, providing them with a comprehensive list of areas where improvements can be made, with ideas on how to increase their effectiveness in 2011. If you are interested in having such an assessment, please contact me to see how I can help.
