SUMMARY:Billing Best Practices: How to Ethically Meet Clients' Expectations
DESCRIPTION:Join me and Carol Schiro Greenwald\, Ph.D  for this webinar focusing on ways to capture more revenue by eliminating clients’ excuses for non-payment\, late payment\, reduced payment\, or complaints about fees. Clients expect invoices to arrive in a timely manner and to contain sufficient information to describe the services provided\, written in a way they can understand. When written from the client’s point of view\, invoices can show progress vis-a-vis the expectations set in the engagement letter. We will discuss the ethics related to setting and collecting fees\, referencing both the ABA and New York State Rules of Professional Responsibility as well as relevant ethics opinions and articles.\n\nYou will learn:\n• How to meet the pricing and billing expectations of 21st-century clients\n• How to discuss billing and pricing with clients\n• Procedures you should have in place to set and meet client expectations\n• Adding payment plans and other options to meet clients halfway when they are struggling financially\n• Modern payment alternatives\n\nABA Model Rules of Professional Responsibility\, New York Rules of Professional Conduct\, and ethics opinions governing billing and payments\, including:\n• Communication with clients about billing\n• Reasonableness of fees and scope of work\n• Changing fees during representation\n• Retainer fees\n• Acceptability of alternative payment methods\n• Trust accounts and fiduciary duties\n• Engagement agreements

SUMMARY:Creating an Exceptional (and Ethical) LinkedIn Presence
DESCRIPTION:Maintaining your professional network is even more crucial now than it ever has been\, and LinkedIn is an often overlooked resource for doing so. Although a large majority of lawyers have a LinkedIn presence\, few lawyers use it strategically or obtain the maximum benefits from using it. Allison C. Johs\, co-author of Make LinkedIn Work for You: A Practical Handbook for Lawyers and Other Legal Professionals\, will present this LinkedIn session to give you practical tips\, answer frequently-asked questions\, and point out ethics pitfalls along the way. She’ll walk you through the three basic building blocks of LinkedIn – Profiles\, Connections\, and Participation and critique some NAWL members’ profiles for real-world examples of how to improve. This session will cover: using LinkedIn to increase your online visibility and encourage referrals;  tips for corporate hiring and recruitment; LinkedIn as a business development and marketing tool for law firms; ethics traps for the unwary LinkedIn user

SUMMARY:Getting Paid: Tips\, Techniques and Ethics
DESCRIPTION:Clients can easily become dissatisfied when they don’t understand the lawyer’s fees or billing practices. Lawyers lose money when they fail to capture their time properly and do not approach billing and invoicing from the client’s perspective. Improper billing practices and poor client communication surrounding fees can result in ethics complaints. But by making a few simple changes to your billing and collections practices\, you can improve your collection rates and your relationship with clients. \n\nEthics and Professionalism Credit(s): 0.5\n\n\nLaw Practice Management Credit(s): 0.5\n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Ethical Issues and Implications on Lawyers’ Use of LinkedIn
DESCRIPTION:Social media sites such as Facebook\, Twitter and LinkedIn have become part of every lawyer’s daily life\, and they can be helpful tools for expanding your professional presence and marketing your practice\, as well as valuable investigative tools. But the same ethical rules that govern lawyers’ conduct also apply to their use of social media\, and that can raise some concerns for lawyers in their use of these tools. \nThis webinar will focus on the ethical use of LinkedIn as a marketing and professional development tool\, but will also touch on broader ethical pitfalls in lawyers’ use of social media in general\, both for marketing purposes and as a litigation tool\, discussing some of the rules and opinions that apply. Some of these issues are: \n\nIs your LinkedIn Profile Advertising?\nStaying away from false or misleading statements\nDo you need a disclaimer on your LinkedIn profiles?\nHow do the solicitation rules apply to LinkedIn?\nDo the “specialties” and “Skills and Endorsements” sections of LinkedIn raise ethical problems?\nShould I ask for client recommendations on LinkedIn?\nConfidentiality issues – what you can and cannot say about clients and cases on LinkedIn and how to communicate ethically with potential clients\nUnauthorized practice of law and inadvertent attorney-client relationships\nWho lawyers can and should connect to on social media\n\nEthics credit available in: \nAlabama\nAlaska\nArizona\nArkansas\nCalifornia\nKansas\nMaine\nMississippi\nMissouri\nNebraska\nNew Jersey\nNew Mexico\nNew York\nOklahoma\nOregon\nPennsylvania\nTennessee\nWyoming \n(This is a “simulive” rebroadcast of a previously recorded presentation. I will be available during the rebroadcast to answer questions.) \nRegister for this broadcast here.
