Are you falling into the comparison trap?
Are you measuring your progress or your career by what other attorneys say about themselves and their practices on social media, on their websites, or at networking events? If so, you’re doing yourself a disservice.
Here’s why.

You might see a success post on social media bragging about a great verdict a lawyer got for a client.
What you don’t see is the fact that the verdict was reversed or reduced on appeal.
You might see an impressive client list on a law firm’s website.
What you don’t see are the complaints the firm receives from clients whose calls aren’t returned or the bills that remain unpaid because the clients aren’t happy with the service they are receiving from the firm.
What you see on a law firm’s website and in their social media posts is what they want the world to see. They are only going to include information that makes them look good. The same goes for networking events, or conversations you have with other lawyers in court or at social events. They are only going to talk about their successes. They aren’t going to proclaim their failures for all to see.
Instead of measuring yourself and your firm’s success against what your colleagues say they’re doing, decide how you define success and develop your own goals and benchmarks to measure yourself against.
